Kodak - Battery 4 x AA NiMH Review

The Kodak Pre-Charged AA NiMH belongs to the latest generation of low-self-discharge NiMH cells. It may not be as well-known as other brands (SANYO eneloop, Rayovac Hybrid, Duracell Pre Charged) but it is just as good according to my own testing:
1. The battery capacity is specified as 2100mAh. But the average capacity I have measured (using my La Crosse BC-900) is actually closer to 2200mAh!
2. After three months in storage, the capacity lost is only around 10%. This is even better than the results I got from eneloop and Hybrid (both close to 15%). Note that the difference could be due to measurement error and different ambient temperature, since those cells were not tested during the same period.
I have used more than a dozen of those Kodak Pre-Charged AA cells in digital camera (Canon S5), external flash (Canon 420EX), plus various toys and gadgets with great satisfaction. This Kodak 4-pack is an excellent buy, especially since it can be found at lower prices than other brands of pre-charged cells. If you are also looking for a fast and compact travel charger, then I highly recommend buying it with the KODAK K6200.
However, there are a few caveats when buying or using those Kodak Pre-Charged cells:
1. Make sure those cells are in WHITE cases. Avoid other Kodak rechargeable cells that come in green or grey cases, as those are not "Pre-Charged".
2. Those cells are slightly fatter than ordinary alkaline cells. Most appliances have no problem accepting them, except for my Microsoft wireless keyboard which has a very tight battery compartment. In this particular case, I have to use Hybrid AA cells since they are slimmer than others.
3. Many vendors here offer this product at a low price, but then charge you ridiculous amount in shipping and handling. If possible, wait for it to be available directly from Amazon, and order it with free "super-saver" delivery.

I have confirmed that 'Kodak Pre-Charged' cells are in fact rebranded GP ReCyko+ Pre-Charged Batteries. The latter can now be found at about 50% lower cost!

Rayovac Everyday-Use Low Self Discharge NiMH AA Size Batteries, 4 Pack Review

Rayovac Everyday-Use Low Self Discharge NiMH AA Size Batteries, 4 Pack

Talk about a confusion campaign! Currently, you can find not one, not two, but FOUR different series of low-self-discharge ('Pre-Charged') rechargeable cells from Rayovac:
- The original 'Rayovac Hybrid' (LD715),
- The 'Rayovac 4.0' (RF715-4C) with ambiguously titled 'Lithium Technology',
- The Rayovac 'Pre-Charged' LSD NiMH (LD715-4OP), and
- The newest 'Rayovac Platinum' LSD Series (PL715-4).
The 'OP' (Opening Product) series offered here is typically priced lower than others. But its rated capacity is very low at just 1400mAh. By the way, you'll not find this capacity number printed on the battery or on its package, not even from the official Rayovac consumer web site. I have to go to 'Rayovac Industrial dot com' to dig up this information.
I have tested four of those 'OP' AA cells, using my old La Crosse BC-900 charger/analyzer. The measured average capacity is slightly higher at around 1500mAh. But note that all other Rayovac LSD series are rated (and measured) at 2100mAh.
Bottom line:
You may pay slightly less for those 'OP' LSD cells, but the capacity you get is also 1/3 less. Worse yet, this capacity number is not marked on each cell. So if you ever mix it together with other LSD cells, it will drag down the capacity of the whole set. Avoid this product if possible.
[Update on Oct 18, 2010]
I can think of one application where the lower capacity of 'OP' cell is an advantage. You can pair this 1.25V NiMH cell with a 1.65V NiZn cell, to get almost exactly 3.0V out of two rechargeable cells. It is important to select two cells with the same charge capacity (1500mAh), to make sure they run down at the same rate. The down-side is that you need two different chargers to recharge your batteries.

Tested a pair of Rayovac Pre-Charged AA cells after three months on the shelf. The remaining charge is about 87%. This is in line with the self-discharge rate of Rayovac Hybrid.

GS Yuasa is a Japanese company that makes batteries mostly for sport vehicles.
My Enitime AAs came pre-charged with my new universal remote control. "Technology from Japan - Made in China". So far, performance is comparable with my other low discharge batteries.
Regular NiMh batteries are old school; these new batteries are greener and better.
Pros:
-For a rechargeable battery, these batteries does not need to be charged before you use it for the first time; right from the packaging into your gadgets.
-They last a long time.
-Does not need special charger. You can use your existing NiMh charger.
Cons:
-After having these batteries for sometime, comparing this set with other brands (Eneloops, Duracell), this set charges less juice.
-This later technology is still expensive.
Other brands of low-discharged batteries are Eneloops by Sanyo, Duracell, Hybrid by Rayovac, etc.

Rayovac Hybrid - Battery 4 x AAA NiMH Review

These are the best AA & AAA batteries I've ever bought. The mfg's claims that they hold on to a charge longer are basically true... far longer. The other "higher capacity" batteries I've used haven't given me as much usage between charges as these Hybrid types, so I am very satisfied.
What would have made them perfect is if I could have bought a smart charger (the kind that can charge in 4 hrs and handle single cells, not just pairs) bundled with them.

Rayovac Hybrid rechargeable batteries come pre-charged and ready to use. This battery technology also takes NiMH rechargeables to a new level. While all batteries self-discharge over time, Rayovac Hybrid NiMH batteries hold their charge better than many traditional NiMH batteries, while not in use. This means that customers can now charge their batteries and know that when they need them, Hybrid batteries will be ready to go without having to go into the charger again. Lasting longer in high-drain devices than regular alkaline, and being able to recharge over and over again mean convenience and value to your customers!
